A couple months ago, I was feeling kinda blah about our weekends because we weren't doing much. Sleeping in, and that was kinda it.
We decided to start hiking again. Nothing crazy. Nothing far. Just an hour hike here and there.
It's become something I look forward to on weekends. A chance to be outside, away from cars, away from screens, just in nature moving our bodies.
Sometimes my knee hurts, and that part is super annoying, but getting in 2-3 miles outside before most people are up feels great.
And every time we go, we discover a different trail for us to try the next weekend.
I love this routine because:
1. It has the structure we need. It's the same thing. Go for a hike on the weekend.
2. It has the flexibility and novelty we need. Go to a different location and see different things.
I feel like any time I am successful at something, it's because it has structure AND flexibility and novelty.
SO I guess that's my advice to you. When creating a new ritual, habit, or routine, make sure it has structure AND flexibility and novelty.
